AREA: Barcelona

Barcelona Centre

In order to develop a more resilient economy in Barcelona’s City Centre, grounded in reducing the dependency on just one economic sector, the strategy set in place is to diversify the economy by creating hubs for different economic sectors in buildings that are currently empty or underutilized. This ambitious strategy includes public pilot experiences that can trigger other contributions by the private sector or ignite public-private collaborations in more than 350,000 sqm in different buildings located in Barcelona’s downtown.
There are three main axes of transformation: La Rambla, the Cultural Axis; Via Laietana, the Innovation Axis; and the science and technology axis, that goes from the Ciutadella Park to the Olympic Port. The first of these projects will take place in the ‘Correos’ building (the former Post Office Headquarters), located at the beginning of Via Laietana. The aim of the proposal is to transform a historic and emblematic building into a hub of startups and companies linked to the digital sector, and a reference in education and re-skilling for digital talent. This initiative will create a legacy of knowledge-intensive economic activity and around 1,500 new value-added jobs in Ciutat Vella, linked to the new sustainable and digital economy.
