The Govern of Catalonia, through ACCIÓ, the agency for the competitiveness within the company, has identify more than 1,200 Catalonian startups, which generate around 12,000 jobs, and have a mean turnover of 1.2 million euros. These data come from Barcelona & Catalonia Startup Hub, a digital platform created in 2016 by ACCIÓ that gathers up and identifies Catalonian startups with the aim of positioning the Catalan startup ecosystem in the world and encouraging fundraising.
This hub was born with the objective of driving international impact to the Catalan startup ecosystem -one of the most dynamics within Europe- and contributing to the fundraising encouragement of these companies. In this sense, Barcelona holds a prominent position in Europe in terms of startups, according to several international rankings, such as the EU-Startups or the Startup Heatmap Europe. Startups are clearly, as well, a driving factor for innovation in Catalonia, as they are the companies with a higher concentration of innovative activity.
Barcelona & Catalonia Startup Hub records companies with a maximum of 10 years of history, with scalable and repeatable business models applicable in global contexts and oriented towards fast growth. In this manner, it has been observed that 23% of the employees at Catalonian startups are foreigners, while it is only a 14% in the case of founders. In terms of age, 40% of these startups have between 3 and 6 years of age, another 40% has less than 3 years, and the remaining 20%, between 6 and 10.
By sectors: internet and mobile software, digital apps on travels and leisure, health technologies and biotechnology assemble the majority of the activity. 39% of these startups use technology related to the 4.0 industry in areas such as Big Data, robotics, simulation, IoT, augmented reality, the cloud or 3D printing. In relation to business models, electronic commerce is the most important (29%), followed by development and production (21%), software licensing, consultancy and agency, and subscription (20%).
